English

The study of English is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In English, students learn about the study and use of the English language in its various textual forms. These encompass spoken, written and visual texts through which meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted and reflected. Complexity increases as students progress through their schooling.

Developing proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident communicators; critical and imaginative thinkers; lifelong learners; and informed, active participants in Australian society. Their understanding of English through knowledge and skills acquisition is essential to their intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

Reading at Wangi Wangi PS

Wangi Wangi PS follows what research tells us is best practice in the effective teaching of reading. Our teachers engage in professional learning sessions to develop ongoing knowledge of teaching reading. At WWPS, we explicitly teach the Big 6 of reading; Oral Language, Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension. Each are interrelated and are what all students need to read with confidence and understanding.

Home reading and literacy support

Parents and carers play a pivotal role in supporting and nurturing their child's reading development. We encourage all students to read widely and deeply, and by modelling this at home, you are supporting your child to understand the importantance of learning to read. Reading is taught at our school every day of the week and prioritised in teaching and learning programs. Parents and carers can support their child's reading development by engaging in play based and supportive literacy practices and activities at home. This can also be supported by engaging with our WWPS Home Reading Program. The video below from the 5 for 5 institute provides some background information and ideas to support reading development at home.
